Per our 8400 Series Vinyl Floor Tile Installation Instructions (TB-9032), Ground Strips should be installed prior to application of the conductive adhesive and tile, which will be applied directly on top of the copper strips. Identify the proper locations for the strips, typically along the base of walls or at columns where there is access to a grounding point (e.g., electrical outlet). The important thing to understand is the human body is a conductor (measured in ohms of resistance) and the electro-static charge is measured in volts. Because the human body is a conductor, a static charge can be induced onto it. An ungrounded body can then act as a capacitor to hold the charge.

No. Plastics (unless specifically designed with conductive compounds) are insulators. Insulators must adhere to the 1 inch/12 inch requirement from ESD susceptible devices or ionization must be used to neutralize the charge on the insulator. Even if the plastic was conductive, rubbing it would be ineffective. Conductors must be continually grounded.

Technically you could be if the ground you were standing on was conductive enough. For instance, moist or wet earth, but not sand. You certainly would not want to be barefooted in a production environment, and you would have no safety resistance to protect you from electrical shock.

The best solution would be to keep each part of the your grounding system separate and not daisy chained together as suggested. If you were to connect your heel strap to your wrist strap which is then connected to the floor mat, the minute you lift your foot off the ground, you would become ungrounded while working at that particular workstation. I would keep them separated by having operators plug in their wrist strap while seated or wear their foot grounders while standing. • 09740 - Can be mounted under the workbench for operators to plug in their wrist straps. • Foot grounders are to be worn in combination with the floor mat. As long as the floor mat is grounded, then the person with foot grounders can stand or walk across the floor mat without accumulating a charge.

Statshield® smocks must be laundered periodically for proper operation. Desco recommends Woolite. Liquid detergents are better than dry because there is less caking and frictional wear. Use only non-ionic softeners and detergents when laundering. Launder Statshield® smocks in cool or warm water, tumble dry with low heat or hang dry. DO NOT USE BLEACH OR FABRIC SOFTENER. Launder Statshield® smocks by hand or with a washing machine. Use a standard household machine on gentle cycle or use an industrial machine if “Pony” (typically under 200 pound loads) machines are used. It is not recommended to launder these Statshield® smocks in heavy industrial laundry machines because it will lead to premature wear; degrading the ESD properties. Statshield® smocks should be tumbled dry using low heat. The carbon-suffused mono-filament nylon is sensitive to heat and should not be exposed to laundering heat in excess of 120°F. Under normal wearing and recommended washing conditions, Desco Statshield® ESD protective smocks will maintain their usefulness and effectiveness for a minimum of 100 washings.

Operator safety always takes precedent to ESD control. Your facilities safety coordinator/officer should be consulted on any question of safety. Desco ionizers are intended to be used with an operator present. There are no known risks associated with using Desco ionizers.

If you were wearing a wrist strap and standing barefoot on conductive flooring of some type, you would only be protected from shock hazard up to 250 with the 1 megohm safety resistor in the strap cord. This would not be recommended even if you could go barefoot in a production environment.

This is not what our products are intended for. However, the metal panel and cabinet that the circuit breakers are mounted to would have a similar effect in shielding EMI.

Yes 130 vAC would hurt - a lot. Thankfully it is not AC volts. Static electricity is different from current electricity (AC or DC). Static electricity has a very low amount of current (measured in amperage). As explained here “voltage is a measure of the pressure that allows electrons to flow, while amperage is a measure of the volume of electrons. An electrical current at 1,000 volts is no more deadly than a current at 100 volts, but tiny changes in amperage can mean the difference between life and death when a person receives an electrical shock.

When it comes to measuring the amount of static voltage on the human body, the voltage is DC not AC. It is measured in volts as the typical test equipment used will not measure millivolts. Also, voltage that low would not be a threat to ESD sensitive electronic components. Also note, that there is no load or amperage in a typical ESD event, so the person is not susceptible to danger as could be with AC voltage.

@@DescoESDControl I understand that static current is always measured in millivolts of alternating current and not in direct current. Grounding experts do it this way when they walk barefoot on the ground.

The mat used in this video is Desco Statfree T2™, which has recently been replaced with Desco Statfree T2 Plus™ (item 66466). It is a Dissipative Dual Layer Rubber material.

@@DescoESDControl Thank you for your answer. We need ESD that should not wrinkle. There are other alternatives in your website: vinyl and G2 rubber. What are the difference between these materials? Which one is softer one such that it should not wrinkle over time?

@@sogut37 We are assuming by wrinkle you mean a crease type situation somewhere on the mat. Under normal use in an electronics manufacturing type environment none of our matting products should wrinkle. As you noted, we have both rubber and vinyl matting materials. You want to select a mat specifically for table use (G2 is a floor mat and is not recommended for table use because of it’s lower resistance).
